Figuring out Food: Nutella

For this assignment, I chose a food that I grew up with, Nutella. I ate it alone, on cupcakes, with peanut butter on a sandwich, on ice cream, the list goes on. However, I never really paid much attention to the actual ingredients.

Something that I do not understand about the nutrition label is the %DV or % Daily Value. I understand that they are telling the consumer that this product will fulfill a certain percent of broadly determined guidelines for the amounts of what a person should eat in a day. However, considering that it is based on a 2,000 calorie diet and that calorie amount only applies to a certain percentage of people, why give the other percent wrong information? Not everyone needs the same amount of everything so to claim that a certain ingredient here fulfilled “x” amount of every person’s daily value is wrong and should not be allowed to be on nutrition labels.
