Figuring out Food: Nutella (Part 2)

I checked to see if the calories Nutella states on the nutrition label is accurate, so I multiplied the fats, carbs and protein all by the calories they give by each gram and added them up for a total of 197 calories, which is three less than the 200 stated on the label.

(yummy picture of nutella before we get into the science of it all)

what is protein?

Protein is a mixture, they are macromolecules built from amino acids.

How much protein is this food item contributing to the % DV? What does that mean?

There is 2g of protein per serving in Nutella, and there is no %DV suggestion next to it. I think this is because there is not a true recommendation for protein since there is no amount that would actually be considered as “too much” protein. However, %DV is the suggested percentage of fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates or protein that is recommended for a 2,000 calorie diet.

What ingredients in your food item are contributing the protein?

Hazelnuts, skim milk, and cocoa all contain protein. Even soy lecithin contains trace amounts of protein.

How many calories in your food item are due to protein?

Since each gram of protein contains 4 calories (according to the FDA), and there are 2g of protein in Nutella, only 8 out of the 200 calories per serving is from protein.

What is Fat?

Fat is another macronutrient. The types of fat are saturated, trans, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Saturated fats are found usually in animals and tend to be solids at room temperature. Trans fats are found in dairy products, lamb and beef, but are mostly man-made and are in partially hydrogenated oils. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated are both found in plants and are liquid at room temperature. (https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/InteractiveNutritionFactsLabel/total-fat.cfm)

How much fat is this food item contributing to the % DV?

Nutella contributes 18% of total fat to the %DV, and 20% of saturated fats.

What ingredients in your food item are contributing the fat?

Palm oil, hazelnuts, skim milk, cocoa, and soy lecithin all contribute to the fat present in Nutella.

What types of Fats does your food item contain? What are these different types of fat and why should we care?

Nutella contains saturated fats. The FDA says that according to Dietary Guidelines for Americans , we should limit our saturated fats to less than 10% of our calories each day. This is because saturated fats raise your cholesterol and clogs your arteries.

How many calories in your food item are due to fat?

Each gram of fat has 9 calories, so the 11 grams of total fats gives 99 calories per serving.
