Working in the Community Garden! (Pt 1)

This past Friday, the 14th of September, I visited the Muhlenberg Community Garden.  I arrived a few minutes before the rest of the class, and did not see anyone in the garden so I sat at a picnic table and admired the small, slightly neglected fenced in area.  Soon, I was joined by my classmates, and we were greeted by the people who tend to the garden.  I was assigned to pull the weeds surrounding the carrots, and I may have excidentally pulled one, as did Izzie, who was working with me.  They said that whatever we accidentally pulled, we could eat, and that it would be the best carrot we have ever tasted.  Not to be rude, but the carrots were… questionable, and not the best.  However, they were also not at all ripe so I cannot make a solidified judgment of how good they truly are.  Although the carrots were not my favorite, as I cleared the weeds I enjoyed seeing their bright orange tops poking out of the soil.  After clearing away a significant amout of weeds, I moved to the front entrance of the garden, and my roommate, whom I invited, joined us in weeding the rare, native flower beds.  Seeing how dedicated the people were about the garden, and how much one hour of my time could help in the progression and upkeep of the garden was extremely rewarding.  I have two more hours to complete, and subsequently write about, and hopefully the carrots will taste better next time!
