Part 3
1. Using the list of the ingredients for your food item, classify all the items on your ingredient list as food or additives.
INGREDIENTS:
Sugar: Food
Palm Oil: Food
Hazelnuts: Food
Skim Milk: Food
Cocoa: Food
Soy Lecithin: Additive. This acts as an emulsifier. It smooths the mixture and keeps the mixture from separating.
Vanillin: Additive. Vanillin is a synthetic flavor additive.

2. Choose TWO Vitamins or Minerals
Two minerals present in Nutella are Sodium (Na) and Calcium (Ca).
Sodium (Na)– 41 mg in nutella serving

According to the FDA, sodium is important for muscle contraction, fluid balance, and the nervous system. However, it is only needed in small amounts because too much raises blood pressure. High blood pressure leads to many other health problems that affect the heart, kidneys, eyes, and brain. FDA calls for a daily intake of less than 2,300mg.

Calcium (Ca)– 108mg in nutella serving

Calcium is important for bone and teeth formation, hormone secretion, muscle contraction, nervous system function, constriction and relaxation of blood vessels and blood clotting. It is recommended to increase this mineral in your diet. A lack of calcium can cause osteoporosis.
3. Carbohydrates
(a) Identify the ingredients that are contributing sugars. What types of sugar are likely to be present? From which ingredients?
There are 21 grams of sugar in every 2 tablespoons serving of Nutella. One of the ingredients is Sugar, coming from cane sugar which is sucrose, the same sugar in hazelnuts. Skim milk has a sugar called lactose.

(b) Identify the ingredients that are contributing fiber. What types of fiber are likely present? Soluble vs insoluble? What ingredients are contributing what?
There is soluble fiber in hazelnuts, while cocoa has both soluble and insoluble fiber.
(c) Determine the grams of starch present in your food item.
There is no starch in my food item.
(d) Perform a calculation of the calories from carbohydrate per serving. Make sure to account for fiber.
22g of carbs ( 1g of fiber and 21g of sugar) x 4 cal/gram= 88 calories from carbs.
4. Combine your carbohydrate calories calculation with earlier calculations on fat and protein to provide a complete analysis of the calories for your food item which includes a pie chart.
According to my earlier calculations, there are 8 calories from protein and 99 calories from fat. 99 cal + 8 cal +88 cal= 195 calories. I tried to subtract the fiber and add again, but that adds up to 191 calories, so since Nutella says it has 200 calories, 195 is closest.
fat: 99 calories / 195 = .5077 x 100 = 50.77%
carbs: 88 cal / 195 = .4513 x 100 = 45.13%
protein: 8 cal / 195 = .0410 x 100 =4.10%
50.77 + 45.13 + 4.10 = 100%
